How to Lock a Wireless Router

Everywhere you go, you always see signs that you should never leave your things unattended. Why then don't wireless routers have a sign that you should not leave it unattended? When you have purchased it, all its settings are at default and if you do not change them and configure them to make it more secure, any hacker can chance upon your vulnerable wireless connection and take advantage.

I bet that is the last thing you want. The share in bandwidth, not to mention, the snooping on shared files is the last thing you need. To help you out, check out the following ways for you to lock your router.

Step 1: Read the user documentation or manual and learn the process there. If you cannot find the manual or if there is none included, log in to their official website and download it from there.

Step 2: Set up your computers and routers first. At the back part of your router, you can see 4 yellow ports called LAN ports. In another color, usually in blue, this is the WAN port. If you are using wireless adapters for your WiFi internet connection, unplug the adapter from the back of your computer and connect it to the WAN port. If you are using a connection that needs modem, unplug the other end of the connection of the modem from your computer and connect it to the WAN port.

Step 3: Wireless network should be able to transmit internet signal once you plug the power cord to the outlet. Assuming that your computer is wireless-ready, plug the computer to set up a secure network for your router. Open a web browser and input the IP address 192.168.1.1 in its address bar.

Step 4: It will ask for the username and password to which you will supply with the default settings. It will direct you to a page where you need to click Security Settings menu.

Step 5: Take this chance to make your network a lot more secure. Change the default password to a personal one and jot it down so you won't forget it and have to resort to restarting the router in the future. Also change the SSID or the name of the connection. This is usually in the default setting too which becomes a lot vulnerable to hackers. Change it to one you also will not forget. Now, you have virtually locked your router. Save the settings and log off.
